GOD BLESSES OUR TECHNOLOGIES
(Tuesday, September 24)
“…So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons. (…) And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them.” (Gen 3: 6-7, 21)
After our decision to snatch knowledge from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, rather than receive wisdom God’s way and in God’s time, we immediately felt a painful self-awareness. We then felt the need to cover ourselves, hiding in the bushes and producing the very-first technology, clothing made of fig-leaves. We thus applied our newfound “knowledge,” not by facing the responsibility that came with it, but by trying to hide from this responsibility.
What did God do then, after He questioned us and established our lack of contrition, for eating of the forbidden fruit? Amazingly, He went along with our very-first, merely-human “solution” to our new predicament of self-awareness and the resulting need to wear clothing: He helped us to improve it, by making us better and longer-lasting clothes, “of skins.” God begins our restoration and to help us get up, after the Fall, by fostering our own idea that was clothing.
Thank You, God, for helping us to help ourselves out of our ruts, also through the work of our own hands, our technologies. Please help me to apply them with Your wisdom, so I don’t use them to dig my ruts deeper. Glory be to You.
