“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” (Jn 1: 1-5)

Today Christ tramples death by death, inviting us to come out of our self-imposed “tombs” and “darkness,” with Him. Let me let Him take me by the hand, and pull me out of my rut, if I happen to be stuck there. Today I can hand myself over to Him, in a bit of faith and heartfelt prayer, even if my “darkness” seems too “dark” to be overcome by this Light coming from a 2,000-year-old Tomb just outside Jerusalem. Particularly if I’ve become distrustful of “words,” or feel betrayed by life in general, let me open up to the Word of God, which was “in the beginning,” and which continues, even in our day, to “shine in the darkness,” which can never “overcome” it.

New Life is on offer, to all of us today, so let me transition from darkness and death into Light and Life, with One Who was in the beginning, before any of our stuff. The Lord Jesus Christ descended into all of this “stuff,” of ours, so He knows its darkest parts. But He overcame it, by going through it, and invites me to walk through it today, perhaps not as dramatically as did He, but baby-step-by-baby-step, in New Life in Him. “Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!”
