GRACE WAS GIVEN TO EACH OF US

Sunday, January 13, 2019

“But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said, ‘When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.’ (In saying, ‘He ascended,’ what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is he who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ;” (Eph 4: 7-13)

We are “all” called to “attain to the unity of faith,” and to “the knowledge of the Son of God,” and to “maturity” in the “fulness of Christ.” But that means that we are not there yet, nor are we “equal,” with our different sets of challenges and gifts. We are all “works in progress,” and are each given a different “measure of Christ’s gift.” He “descended” even into “the lower parts” of our reality, even into our hell, in order to bring “all” of us, – the “highers up” and the “lowers down,” into His transfigurative “fulness.” Because He can and does “fill all things,” including each of our lives.

Today let me embrace my own set of challenges and gifts, with gratitude and humility. It’s A-OK to be me, however “low” my own vocation might seem in comparison with the gifts and vocations of others. Thank You, Lord, for calling each of us to the “building up” of Your body, giving all of us purpose and meaning in our beautiful faith. “Let not your hearts be troubled;” the Lord says to us today, “Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” (Jn 14: 1-3) Lord, glory be to You.
