LOSING ONE’S HOME

Monday, December 31, 2018

“Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.’ And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt have I called my son.’” (Mt 2: 13-15)

I also know some people, in my today, who have been uprooted from their homes and their homelands, like the family of Syrian refugees that came over to Coffee-HQ for a Christmas-dinner just a few days ago. And I know another family, an American one in the United States, about to lose its home of many years, because the parents (both hard-working) can no longer afford a house. Both these families (particularly the parents, as far as I can see) struggle with fear, disorientation, depression, and even shame, for becoming “displaced” in a world beyond their control.

This heartbreaking, human tragedy, of losing one’s home, is one of the first things God allowed to happen to the human “family” of His only-begotten Son. And it was His “parents,” the Most-Holy Theotokos and the righteous Joseph, who were given, nay, chosen to receive, the very difficult cross of carrying Him through this. As I contemplate the parallels between “The Holy Family” and the holy families in my midst, given this same cross today, my heart breaks for them. Because I can’t really help. But I say, Thank You, Lord, for revealing Yourself to us in Your chosen ones, who carry You into our midst.
