DON’T WORRY ABOUT APPEARANCES
“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hid that shall not be made manifest, nor anything secret that shall not be known and come to light. Take heed then how you hear; for to him who has will more be given, and from him who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.” (Lk 8: 16-18)
Don’t worry about appearances, my Lord tells me in this passage. Because if I truly “hear” His word, that is to say, if I let it light up my life, then it will also be a light for “those who enter” my “house.” And this is true, regardless of whether this is “known” or celebrated in my world, say, by honors bestowed upon me in my church-community, or on social media. Because here our Lord is talking about that which shall “be made manifest” and will “come to light” not (only, or primarily) to our own, limited human perceptions, according to the fashion or taste of our day, but to His enduring perception, above and beyond that which we can see.
So today let me be a “have,” rather than a “have not,” of God’s enlightening word. Because I have that choice. Let me embrace the light that is lasting, of God’s word in my heart, that I may be an enduring light to those around me, by God’s grace, however small or unnoted, in my broader society, this light may be. Let me contemplate and internalize a bit of His word today, like the passage offered to us above, in our Church’s reading for today. And let me re-connect with Him in some heartfelt prayer, that I may bring His light, and not mine, which I might think I have, to those in my small vicinity, in the small ways that I can.
