“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” (Mt 13: 45-46)

Who is the “merchant” in this parable? It is God. He “seeks” me, the human being willing to be “on the market” for God to “buy,” as the “pearl of great price” amidst His creation. So He gave “all that He had,” – even His only-begotten Son, – to acquire me, in soul and body, as His own. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should have everlasting life.” (Jn 3: 16)

I am not “bought” by God against my will, as is the case with human bondage, but only with my “Amen” to His Spirit and truth in my life. Such is the “pearl” that my Father in heaven is “seeking,” as my sister-in-Christ, the Samaritan woman, is told by Him: “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.” (Jn 4: 23)

Thank You, Lord, for reminding us, in our Church’s reading for today, that we are Your “beautiful pearls,” which You are “seeking,” regardless of human opinion of our body-and-soul human being, – regardless of our own opinion of our own soul and body, or that of others, – which might at times be discouragingly-negative or just indifferent (because we might be awkward, or "overweight," or dysfunctional, or whatever). Thank You, for reminding me that I do not “belong” to these opinions, no. I am not “their” possession. I am Yours, in Spirit and body, as the Apostle Paul says to us: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Cor 6: 19-20) So let me honor You today, as I am, in my body and soul, and in Your Spirit and truth, because You value all of me, and “seek” all of me, as Your “beautiful pearl.”
