And Jesus went on from there and passed along the Sea of Galilee. And he went up on the mountain, and sat down there. And great crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the maimed, the blind, the dumb, and many others, and they put them at his feet, and he healed them, so that the throng wondered, when they saw the dumb speaking, the maimed whole, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.” (Mt 15: 29-31)

Here we see our Lord Jesus Christ enabling the dumb to speak, the maimed to walk, and the blind to see, i.e., to do the things most people could do in the first place. He also liberates me to do the things I am supposed to be able to do in the first place, like speak, walk, and see, when merely-human fears and self-centeredness have me going around in self-isolated circles. God’s grace brings me out of that, so I can be myself. I mean, the “self” that God calls me to be, speaking, walking, and seeing according to my vocation.

And He does this for me with ease, because He can. As Jesus did, seated, when He went up on the mountain, and “sat down there.” God unties the knots of my self-doubt, God-doubt, resentment, procrastination, despondency, and laziness, – and helps me to do, say, and see the “next right thing,” whatever that may be, in His grace. I know, this sounds a bit abstract and dreamy, like the sort of thing a nun would say about Jesus ☺. But in practical terms, God’s grace, when I open up to it, does give me the sort of peace, with myself and my responsibilities, that frees me to do “the next right thing.” This makes sense, when I try it; I mean when I actually try opening up to His grace, rather than just talk about it. So let me re-connect with Him today, in just a bit of heartfelt prayer, that I may be “right” with Him, and through Him become “right” with myself and others, that I may do, speak, and see as He does with ease, just sitting there. Glory be to You, the God of Israel.
