THE GIFTS OF SEEING & HEARING

Then the disciples came and said to him, ‘Why do you speak to them in parables?’ And he answered them, ‘To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to him who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand… But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.’” (Mt 13: 10-13, 16)

So it’s a God-given gift, truly to “hear” and to “see.” When we forget or refuse to rely on God’s grace in the whole business of “discernment” or understanding, as if our intellect came from us, we are reduced to a “people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening,” incapable of real communication and communion. In this case, our Lord’s words fall “like silent raindrops,” with no effect on our hearts.

Today let me take pause, and let God disturb “the sound of silence” in my self-reliant and self-sufficient heart. Let me truly hear and see today, O Lord, in You, because I can’t do that on my own.
