Then a blind and dumb demoniac was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the dumb man spoke and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, ‘Can this be the Son of David?’ But when the Pharisees heard it they said, ‘It is only by Be-elzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” (Mt 12: 22-24)

So the Pharisees of that time, just like the Pharisees of ours, have it all figured out. They are neither “amazed,” as are the people, nor do they have any questions, as do the people, who ask: Can this be the Son of David? The self-assuredness of the Pharisees makes them utterly blind and utterly useless to their own people, so they just stand by, pontificating and theologising in their know-it-all way, while the Lord actually brings healing, sight, and speech to the suffering. Lord, on this Independence Day, deliver us from the blind self-assuredness of those with no questions, that we may be open to healing; that we may begin to speak, and to see, in You.
