But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen...’” (Lk 24: 1-6)

The two angels, the “two men in dazzling clothes” are not all that direct in delivering the news of the resurrection to these women. First, they allow the women to be “perplexed” for a bit, about the rolled-away stone. And then, “suddenly,” the two make their appearance, introducing themselves with the silliest question: “Why do you seek the living among the dead?

Now, please excuse me, – But what a question! I mean, after all that had happened, of COURSE these heartbroken women sought their crucified and buried Lord “among the dead.” After all, they had seen Him breathe His last, and die, and be buried. And then they had spent all of Saturday in deep mourning.

But here’s the charming thing about this vital moment in Salvation History: The two angels apparently take delight in delivering the good news of Christ’s resurrection to the women in this playful, gradual way: “Why,” they first ask, teasingly, “do you seek the living among the dead?” Only after that, they deliver the good news, and explain: “He is not here, but is risen…”

I have no deep theological point to make here today, except to note the playfulness of our joy today, in our Lord’s resurrection. Christ is risen from the dead, so let all the darkness and earnestness of death be trampled, by Him. Christ is risen, dear zillions! So please relax, and enjoy the grace of the feast!
