THINGS CHANGE

And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, ‘God has appointed for me another child instead of Abel, for Cain slew him.’ To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the Lord.” (Gen 4: 25-26)

It was only then, “at that time,” after The Fall, that “men began to call upon the name of the Lord.” Things changed. I don’t know the exact reason for the change at this specific moment, – why it happened after Enosh was born to Seth, who was born to Eve after Cain killed Abel. But I do know from the Bible that “men began” a different kind of relationship with the Lord at that point, by calling upon His name. I’d like to reflect on the simple fact of that change.

Things changed back then, and they also continue to change today, when it comes to our relationship with God. Because Salvation History always tells us something about our own “history” with God. That’s why Salvation History, recorded in the Bible, is relevant to me today, and why it is recorded in the first place, and continues to be passed on to all of us, throughout the generations, – because we “recognize” our own path in the paths made by the persons mentioned in the Bible. In the passage quoted above, I “recognize” that I also had times when I did not “call upon the name of the Lord,” and when I “began,” again, “to call upon” it. From reading the Bible-passage, I also receive the assurance and consolation that I am not the first to experience this change.

So today, if I find myself in the rut of “not” calling upon the name of the Lord, for whatever reason, let me be reminded that change is possible. I can “begin to call upon the name of the Lord,” because He signals to me, through these messages in Scripture, that change is possible. Let me call upon His name today, however imperfectly, as many have before me, from the very beginning of our imperfect relationship with Him. “O Lord, I have cried to you; hear me!
