IT’S ALRIGHT, MA

Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber; but he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” (Jn 10: 1-5)

There are many “voices of strangers” in positions of leadership today, or so it seems to me anyway. But that’s no cause for fear, as Bob Dylan prophetically notes: “So don’t fear if you hear / A foreign sound to your ear / It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing.”

What I’d like to listen for today, while “only sighing” under the leadership of strangers, is His voice, the voice of our Lord, Who continues to “go before us” that we may follow, urged on and nurtured by His word. As I re-connect with Him today in some prayer, contemplation, and quiet self-examination, I ask that all my entrances and exits be “by the door” that is Jesus Christ and His loving, motherly Spirit, in Whom everything is made “alright.” It’s alright, Ma, It's life and life only.
