WHERE IS THE DEBATER OF THIS AGE?
“For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.’ Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe.” (1 Cor 1: 18-21) Don’t I know the “wisdom of the world”? I do. It tells me things like, it’s important to be “right,” debating with the “debaters of this age”; that I have “will-power,” and can always “be right” and successful, if only I tap into “the power inside me.” But it’s not “inside me,” as it turns out. The “message about the cross,” about walking through life on Life’s terms, comes from outside me. This life-giving message comes from the One, primary Cross-Carrier, my Lord Jesus Christ, Who shows me the least-expected solution to my problems and trials: To walk through them. And I am to do this not on my own “will-power.” He invites me to “follow Him,” promising me that He “will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you” (Jn 14: 16-17). So let me reach out today, to the help I find outside me, in “the power of God.” Because I’ve tried my own “wisdom,” and it didn’t work. Glory be to Him, Who liberates us from the wise, the scribe, and the debater of this age, bringing true power, the power of God, “to us who are being saved.”
