WHO – ME?!

You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Mt 5: 13-14)

“You are,” He says to all of us, both “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” So let me not look over my shoulder when He says it, as if He doesn’t mean me. Because I tend to do that, when my Lord encourages me with His humbling compliments.

Today let me be what I “am,” according to what He says, and not according to what I or other people tend to think I am. Let me be “salt,” – so precious in past times, it was used as a currency (hence our English word “salary” comes from “salarium”). Let my words and actions have His “taste,” having the kind of impact He has in our midst, preserving our world from decay – as salt preserves certain foods. And let me let Him shine, through me, “before others,” rather than drag others down either with my words or with my silences. Today I can benefit and encourage others, as He does me, with the salt and light of humbling compliments.
