“He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: ‘Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles - the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.’ From that time Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent (Μετανοεῖτε), for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Mt 4: 13-17)
What is the very first message of the “great light” Who inserts Himself into our “region and shadow of death”? It is change. He says to us, “Metanoeite,” – Change your mind, your focus.
I can do that again today. Because a new perspective, a new “light has dawned” on my little situation. “Repentance” is not only and not primarily my perspective of the past; It is “our” perspective, mine and His, of the future, beginning now. Let me let Him shed His light on my upcoming 24 hours, which I need not walk through alone. “Thy kingdom come,” I say to Him this morning, as it “has come near” to the very place I’ve been sitting.
