Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; but Jesus said, ‘Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.’ And he laid his hands on them and went away.” (Mt 19: 13-15)

What does it mean to be “such as these,” that is, children? It means being able 1. to play, and 2. to laugh, and 3. to learn new things every day. At least this is what springs to my mind, when I think of children and childhood.

Today let me open to the God-given gifts so obvious in my childhood, but sometimes obscured in my adulthood: 1. Of taking time out for healthy “play,” rather than overscheduling my work; 2. Of being able to laugh, when I’m taking myself too seriously; and 3. Of being teachable, i.e., of being open to the wisdom in the people, places and things God sends my way today. “For it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”
