IF WE CONFESS OUR SINS

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship (κοινωνίαν) with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth; but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship (κοινωνίαν) with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess (ὁμολογῶμεν) our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 Jn 1: 5-9)

So the answer to the awkward reality of my committed “sins,” – that is to say, my straying from God’s purpose for me, or “missing the mark” He has in mind for me, – is my “fellowship,” or “communion” (κοινωνία) with God and others. I cannot, and need not, carry the burdensome fact of my failings alone. They have brought me out of harmony with myself, God, and others, and as such, cannot be “handled” by the self, alone in its disharmony. When I “con-fess,” or “say with” and before another, my sins, stepping out of the darkness of self-deception and fear, I shed God’s light on my darkness. And “the light shines in the darkness,” and the darkness does not overcome it (Jn 1: 5).

In true “fellowship,” I have many who co-carry my burdens. I also have One Who has not only carried the burden of my sins, but died to overcome them in me. So let me bring them out before His One Body, in which my sins continue to be carried and cleansed, in true fellowship.
