FINANCIAL CONCERNS & FAITH
“Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’ But he said to him, ‘Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator (μεριστὴν, divider) over you?’ And he said to them, ‘Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of covetousness (πάσης πλεονεξίας); for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’” (Lk 12: 13-15)
Does this mean that our Lord is not willing to help us with financial worries? No. It means, He is not willing to contribute to “dividing” us through matters financial. Because money should not come between us, if our priorities are in order: First, we must maintain love and peace amongst ourselves and with Him, that we may have “life.” We lose touch with “life” if the “abundance of possessions” becomes the primary object of our “yearning” or “coveting.” Conversely, if my priorities are in the proper order, and I place my heart and my life in the hands of the Giver of Life, I also find peace with my financial situation, whatever it may be.
Today let me begin my day with putting God in the center of everything. I hand over to Him all my concerns, as I do the next right thing today, in my work and other responsibilities. “Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,” I say to Him today, “as we forgive those who trespass against us.” That’s what He teaches me to be concerned about today, as He continues to provide for me, in His light and His peace. Glory be to Him.
