NOT CONDEMNED

Thursday, May 12, 2016

For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. He who believes in him is not condemned; he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does what is true (ὁ ποιῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν) comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been wrought in God.” (Jn 3: 16-21)

How liberating it is, to be one who “does what is true.” When I am in “truth,” doing the next right thing, being true to God, myself, and others, I am liberated from hiding all the time. One need not hide, or self-isolate, or have fear of people and their opinions, or of situations and their outcomes, when walking in God’s light, small step after small step. Because faith replaces fear, self-loathing, and the kind of “judgment” that comes from darkness; the perpetual “thumbs down” toward everything and everyone, including myself.

Let me carry this word around with me today: The “condemnation” talked about here does not come from God, Who sent the Son into the world “not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” Let me open up to Him, shedding His light on my entire being, the good and the bad. Because my good and my bad is taken on by His Son, Who is sent to bring me not a condemning “thumbs down,” but the healing grace of salvation through Him.
