In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (Jn 1: 1-5)

So…mind blown. This happens every time I read the beginning of the Gospel according to John. And this passage is read in our Orthodox churches on the Feast of Feasts, on the night of Pascha. Why? I mean, – Why don’t we read a Gospel-passage about the Resurrection?

Because our church-services take us even deeper, to the very “beginning.” That “beginning” is made again today, with His resurrection from the Tomb. He, the eternal Word through Whom “all things were made,” gives us new life today, in Him, Who has walked through our darkness and our hell, which we chose and continue to choose, in poor or mistaken choices. He overcomes all that today; He “tramples” it by walking through it, not avoiding it. The Maker of all things makes things right today, as only He could.

He tramples death “by death” itself, in His human-divine Person, rising out of our darkness, in His and our resurrected, human body. His indeed physical resurrection, His light and life, is mine today, in the both physical and spiritual humanity He has willed to share with me. “Christ is risen from the dead,” my friends, bestowing life on those in the tombs, including me, because His light “shines in the darkness,” be it mine or anyone else’s, and the darkness does not, indeed it does not, overcome it. “Your resurrection, O Christ, Saviour, the angels praise in the heavens. Make also us, on earth, worthy to glorify You with pure hearts.” Christ is risen!
