Jesus said, ‘Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first.’ And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, ‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise.’” (Mk 10: 29-34)

This is not the first time Jesus talks about the Cross, but it is as if the disciples do not hear Him. They are blocking out the word of the Cross, because they’re afraid of it, as it says here, “and those who followed were afraid.” But note that they do continue to follow, despite their fear. Our Lord Jesus Christ is that compelling, and that beloved, by the disciples, that they continue to follow Him, even when they can not, or will not, hear His words. Their love is stronger than their faith.

Today let me open up to Christ’s compelling presence in my life, and follow Him even when I don’t understand where we’re going or why. In these final days before Great Week, let me walk with Him “up to Jerusalem,” detaching myself gradually from other attachments, concerns, and issues. “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem,” He says to me today, “and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death…”
