“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; he does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself, and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of man. Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come forth, those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.” (Jn 5: 24-29)
The Lord reminds me today that His word is life-giving. And it is not just any kind of “life”-giving, but “eternal life”-giving. Because there is more than one form and level of “life,” which is a gift we receive in order to develop it and grow it, to its unending potential, in the Source of Life Who is God. He alone has “life in Himself” and of Himself, so He alone can and does give us life, sharing with us His being.
Let me hear His voice once again today, and “come forth,” responding to His call. He lets me “pass from death to life,” again and again, teaching me responsive-ness and response-ability, whenever I slip back into various forms of death, which is fragmentation or separation within me, from His one ultimate purpose for me. This one, divine purpose is unity with Him and all creation. I learn in the here and now to get up and respond again, so that in the fulfilment, on the day of God’s Final Judgment, I can come forth to “the resurrection of life.” Today let me be among “those who hear,” as I choose truly “to live” His kind of life, which includes Him in the ups and downs of my daily schedule.
