WHAT COVENANT?

Thursday, March 24, 2016

…Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you; for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’” (Mt 26: 27-28)

What “covenant”? In the human-divine Person of Jesus Christ, we have the ultimate “covenant” (from the Latin “con” and “venire,” meaning literally “a coming together”) between God and us. All other covenants are now superseded, all other offerings are made unnecessary, in the God-Man Jesus Christ. He not only manifests a “coming together,” or unity, of divinity and humanity in Himself, in His own Person. No. He goes on to restore this lost unity in us, by taking on our brokenness, our darkness and our death – all the consequences of our sin. He takes all this on, shedding His blood and giving His life, in order to overcome it all for us, as one of us, in His glorious resurrection. As the great prophet Isaiah says, “upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed.” (Is 53: 5)

The Lord invites me to participate in His new “covenant” not only intellectually, not only “spiritually.” He invites me, and “all” of us, to partake in Him as He partook in humanity, also physically. As we “proclaim His death” at the Eucharist (1 Cor 11: 26), let me remember also the physical reality of my Lord’s upcoming journey of abandonment, beatings, bruises, mockery, crucifixion, and indeed blood, “poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” He offers me a new “covenant” today, to make me “whole,” – both spiritually and physically.
