Long ago God spoke to the fathers in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by the Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the ages. He is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he carries everything by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” (Hebr 1: 1-4)

Indeed, God has spoken “to us.” And He didn’t only do so “long ago,” nor only “by the prophets.” He has spoken to us, and continues to speak to us, most directly, by the Son and our Lord Jesus Christ. Having become one of us, and taken on our humanity even unto our death and our hell, He “purified” all of it in Himself, and elevated us, our humanity, to a status “much superior to angels.”

So this passage reminds me today of the radically-new possibilities opened up to me in communion with Christ, “the radiance of God’s glory.” He does not depart from this world, even as He sits “at the right hand of the Majesty,” but continues to “carry everything,” including me, as I am, “by His powerful word.” Let me let Him carry me today, and speak to me, in my powerlessness and defects. These do not diminish Him, nor do they stop Him from carrying me, “by His powerful word.”
