BUILDING ON ROCK

I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.” (Lk 6: 47-49)

Do I just “hear” His words, as I did yesterday morning in church, and then go about my business from Monday to Saturday, as if everything in my life depended on my own words, my own will, and my own “lights”? Yes, sometimes I do slip into self-reliance, and dependency on human word and opinion. And this God-less attitude, sometimes very subtle, can bring horrible disappointment. “Great is the ruin of that house.

But building in God, with God, and in the light of His word, letting it be “dug deeply” into my heart, gives my “house” stability. A conscious, daily contact with God, when I open up to Him in prayer and attentiveness to His word, removes the “sting” both from the ups and the downs of ever-changing life-situations. Today let me hand over any financial difficulties, professional frustrations, personal relationships, and inner challenges into God’s hands, shedding His gentle light on them. “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom 8: 38-39)
