THE PROMISE OF LAUGHTER

Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh (ὅτι γελάσετε).” (Lk 6: 21)

Here is an oft-forgotten, oft-neglected promise made by my Lord to those who take up their cross: laughter! I have seen this promise come true in the lives of people who lead lives of conscious, spiritual growth and struggle: Despite their unmistakeable, focused earnestness, - they often laugh wholeheartedly. They have the capacity to laugh good-naturedly at themselves, and at the absurdity of some of our human predicaments.

So laughter is a gift of the Holy Spirit, promised to those of us who open up to weeping – to weeping in His light, according to His truth. These are not tears of self-pity, resentment, or bitterness. In His grace we open up to tears of compassion, surrender, acknowledgment of our fragmentation and yearning for “salvation,” that is, restoration of our lost wholeness.

Today let me open up to God’s gifts, both of weeping and laughter. Because both of these are God-given channels of release, unlike the traps of anger or resentment. God’s kind of weeping and laughter allow me to release things, to let them go in His way. “Blessed are you who weep now,” He says to me today, “for you will laugh.”
