HE GIVES TO EACH OF US
“But each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it is said, ‘When he ascended on high he made captivity itself a captive; he gave gifts to his people.’ (When it says, ‘He ascended,’ what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.” (Eph 4: 7-13)
Indeed, Christ entered into “all things,” not only “ascending” and elevating our humanity in His divine dignity. He also “descended” into the lowermost parts of our “hell,” of the human experience, even unto death. His light thus touches the best in us, and the worst in us. Because there is nothing, absolutely nothing in my experience, in my daily falling or rising, which He isn’t willing to take on, heal, and transfigure in Him, in His body.
Whatever “place” I am in today, whatever level of “maturity,” let me let Christ in, and begin anew in Him, in the building up of His body, wherever or however I am. The gifts of “the unity of the faith” and of “the knowledge of the Son of God” are already given, in Him. I have only to embrace them, in whatever “measure” I can today, if only by showing up, by being there, among others gathered in His name. Let me not close off today nor self-isolate, but enter into communion with my resurrected Lord, Who “made captivity itself a captive.” Let me let Him liberate me today, in His grace of unity and knowledge, which “each of us was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” Amen.
