“Give us this day (σήμερον) our daily bread.” (The Lord’s Prayer, Mt 6:11)
The Lord teaches me to place my dependence on Him in a childlike manner, just for today (σήμερον). Praying the Lord’s Prayer, as He taught me to pray, I make a decision to see this day, and all of today’s basic necessities, both physical and spiritual, as a gift from Him. Regardless of how I translate “our daily bread” or our “super-essential bread” (τὸν ἄρτον ἡμῶν τὸν ἐπιούσιον), I know that scripturally “bread” means basic nourishment; what any human being needs to go on.
Praying the Lord’s Prayer I am liberated from excessive wants, and also excessive concerns, about tomorrow or yesterday. Because excessive worry hinders my ability to go about my daily cares in His Spirit; that is, with a healthy reliance on His grace. The Lord teaches me in this prayer to simplify my spiritual journey, by renewing my reliance on Him every immediate day. I do not build my spiritual house on yesterday’s prayer, nor last Sunday’s, nor can I effectively be present to the cares of today by excessively worrying about tomorrow.
Let me place everything in His hands once again today, as I go about tending to my responsibilities. This is enough for today, as He reminds me: “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Mt 6: 34)
