Jesus prays for His followers to the Father: “I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.” (Jn 17:15-19)
These words in the Gospel of John, spoken in prayer by Christ for those who will follow Him, remind me that it is not His will that we be taken “out of the world.” It is rather His will that we be “sanctified in truth,” which is His word, in the world.
So, I remind myself, it is not in escape from my “world” that my path to sanctification lies. I have various matters, responsibilities, and relationships I must tend to in “the world.” I need not fear all that, because I am not in “the world” by mistake, nor am I on my own. According to the words of the Lord, I am “sent” into it, as are all those who believe in Him. And I am given His word to accompany, guide, protect, and sanctify me.
Let me keep Scripture close, on a daily basis, so that I’m not alone with my own “truth,” but sanctified and protected by His.
