MEETING CHRIST

“And it had been revealed to (Simeon) by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. So he came by the Spirit into the temple…” (Lk 2:26-27)

St. Simeon, who meets Christ at the temple and rejoices at seeing Him, when the Lord was brought there on the fortieth day after His birth, comes into the temple “by the Spirit.”

There is a simple message for me here. And that is, any “meeting of Christ” and “seeing Christ” occurs “by the Spirit.” This includes my daily life in Christ, as well as liturgical life – going to church. I remind myself today that my actions alone, devoid of the divine energies of the Holy Spirit, cannot bring me to truly “meet” and “see” Christ. This is why church-services and other forms of piety can easily become burdensome and boring, when I lose the humble awareness of my need to act, pray, seek and come, “by the Spirit.” Today I humbly ask Him, the Giver of Life, to breathe life into my prayer, and to help me “see,” by His grace.
