In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.” (Gen 1: 1-5)

 

This is read in my church today, on the very first day of Lent. We are taken way back, to the “beginning,” to the great mystery of Creation; The answer to the great question, Why is there something rather than nothing? Because God loved it into being. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (Jn 1:1-3)

I am beginning another day, another week, again. So let me think about the very basis for my “beginning.” I do have a beginning, because I am created. I am not alone and meaningless. I have Meaning, because I am created by the eternal Word, the eternal Meaning, God, the Logos. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen 1:1) My existence is not isolated; it is relational. I am a creature, and relate to my Creator, and to all creation.

Let me remember my Meaning, our Meaning, not for the whole week, but just for today. Because every day I begin again. I can't build to...
